I was  surprised and excited that a swallowtail had landed on my leg…cuz that is super cool and groovy…and must mean something profound!  Right????

Another part of my mind was trying to document the fabulous words of wisdom being shared by this ethereal being…along with noticing what a cool gown the goddess babe was wearing.  Which lead me to wonder where she got that dress?  I loved the fabric!  I could make some awesome curtains for our bedroom with that fabric!!

And another part of me was noticing that the neighbors dogs had been barking for awhile prompting the human who lives there to come outside and start yelling at them to “shut the hell up!!!” 

As I brought my attention back to my meditation, the cool goddess babe shrugged her shoulders and told me she was gonna take off .  The dogs were distracting her too and she was getting a headache from all the barking!  So we said our good byes…and off she went.  By this time the butterfly had taken off as well and was floating  to it’s next adventure…and it was just me…sitting on a chair…outside in the sun…listening to the human next door continue to yell at her dogs.

I decided it was time to go in.

As I poured myself another cup of  coffee and sat down with my journal I started to laugh and shake my head.  What a funny meditation that was!  So much contrast.  And you know how I love contrast   From a sweet butterfly, to a groovy goddess babe with a slammin dress on, to barking dogs… to barking humans.

Interestingly enough…the question that I began my meditation with was “how can I be more focused in my day to day?”  I tend to flit from one thing to the next.  Like that butterfly.  I am focused on what is in front of me….but, then the next shiny object captures my attention.  (I have gotten up 3 times during this blog post to rinse out my coffee cup, to look out the window, and to feed the birds).

Now, I am not saying that this is a bad way of doing things….it’s just that I have these big projects I am working on. I am focused for a bit…gettin into a good groove, and then I start to drift.  The drifting tendency has made these projects go on for way too long.  In fact, if I keep drifting like this…I know that at some point, I am gonna disconnect from my momentum and put them down all together!

It is so funny to me that this groovy goddess shows up to share some brilliant wisdom….and what do I do?  I notice her dress and start to wonder how I could find that same material to make some curtains.  Talk about a major mental drift.  I mean don’t get me wrong, she was totally thrilled that I loved her dress…and she agreed that curtains would look awesome in that same fabric…but, that is not the point!

Or is it?

I just don’t know.

All I know is that I am beginning to drift again.  That same butterfly keeps floating past my window, beckoning me to come outside and see the new flowers that are beginning to bloom.  And I am dreaming of her dress….very cool fabric…maybe I can find some like that…on line?  Or at the fabric store?  Maybe I will go look for it…

That was the part that really got the tears going.

Can you imagine having to say goodbye to your children?  To your partner?  To your friends?

While I was jumping into this very sad image…my son stopped by.  He is so full of life.  Full of energy.  Alive and well.  And for a moment…just a split second…I felt bad that we were so alive and well.  As he shared his frustration about the traffic and the crappy drivers “here in Colorado” I relaxed and enjoyed the life and the frustration that was spilling out of him.

Then I got kind of annoyed…heard this before…when is he gonna get over it???? And then for a moment…just a split second…I felt bad that I had felt so annoyed.  What right do I have to be annoyed at my sons annoyance when there are people who are dying and families who are suffering?  What right do I have to thrive while others are seemingly not?

This was just a whisper of a thought.  Quick and to the point.

After my son left, I sat with this amazing paradox.  Pain and suffering on the one hand…thriving and joy on the other.  How do we hold them both?  Do we even want to hold them both?  Does holding them both muck things up for us?

One of the challenges for me living as a human on the planet…is that I want everyone to thrive.  Well, maybe that is not totally true!  There are some shitty people out there doing rotten things…I want them to suffer for it!!! Ahhhhhh…more paradoxes!  On the one hand, I have a very expansive capacity for love and compassion and then on the other hand I can be as punitive (in my mind) as the best of em.

Interestingly, (at least to me) is that there are rotten people out there having great lives and lovely people who have to suffer through lung cancer.  It is a head scratcher.  I just don’t get it.  And maybe that is part of the whole thing…it ain’t for me to get.

It is just a big ol’ paradox.

It is an “and/both” situation.

It is a huge gargantuan pile of contrast.

And it is a major part of our journey as humans on the planet.  On the one hand…this is so beautiful and on the other hand…that is so not.  On the one hand…this feels so wonderful and on the other hand…that felt so painful.  On the one hand this is so fun…on the other hand…that over there sucks so bad.

And I suppose this is part of what makes being alive so incredible.  We need contrast to see, to hear, to taste, to touch…to learn….to grow….on and on and on.  You can’t have dark without the light. You can’t feel fully awake without some good sleep.

So, I guess there is no conclusion for this post.  I have been trying to find a whitty closing for days.  I guess I will just end this here…filled with contrast and wonder…filled with questions and no clear answers…sittin’ here in the paradox of being a human on this planet.

Where was I????

Oh ya…painful…writing…blog…

So here is how things have been going:

The last few weeks, I wake up, grab a bowl of coffee, read my emails, look at my schedule to see who I get to tap with, and then sit and stare blankly at my computer screen waiting for some inspiration…something….anything.

In the last 3 weeks, I have written 15 drafts.

I wrote a handful of lines on my love of the word “skallywag.”  But when I looked up the word to make sure I was spelling it right, I realized that the spelling I was using had a different meaning then I was intending.  I meant scallywag not skallywag.

BIG difference:

Skallywag (urban dictionary): A crack head or crack whore, one that lives on the streets and bums for money to buy alcohol or drugs.

Uh….that’s not what I was thinking of when I wrote those 4 sentences.

I was talking about this other word:

Scallywag: one who is playfully mischievous, a scamp, a rascal.

Yeah.  That’s the one.

Then, I started to worry that maybe all the times that I used scallywag to talk about myself or someone else (like my kids or my fella)…they thought I meant skallywag…they might have thought I was calling myself a crack whore….or my fella and kids crack  heads!  And that thought just led to some other strange thoughts until I started feeling really weird.  I took my hands off the keyboard.  Then I clicked on ‘save draft’ and that was that.

There are drafts on topics like the exploring ‘effort vs stuggle’  ( I am still intrigued by this…but, my writing was particularly unfunny that morning.), spiders that have moved into our house,  the bunnies that play with the mice that play with the spiders that live with us…oh, there is even a draft on mentoring EFT practitioners (which I do a lot of…but, was also a bit on the dry side).

On and on the drafts go.

Just drafts.  Can’t get them to come alive.

But every morning I wake up hopeful that this writers block will go away.  That something will stick.  That I will sit at my  computer and wonderfully funny sequences of words will flow through me.

Writers block-a-roo…kind of a strange place to be in.   I want to keep writing….I want to keep blogging…I love writing whitty things about the human experience…and it just ain’t happenin’.

I understand now why folks talk about continuing to write even if ya got nothin to say.  At least it keeps your writing muscles sorta warmed up and flexible.

Oops.  Gettin off track again.

Anyway, that is what I have been doing…writing even though my words are dry and lacking texture.

Writing crappy nothings. Dry, flat, crappy nothings.

Writing this post has taken some effort.  A fairly decent amount of effort.

Writing the last 15 crappy nothing posts felt like a struggle.

Pretty trick.  Hmmmmm maybe I have more to say about this after all….

The other day, I was driving home from a fun adventure.  I thought to myself  “I have it now! This will be fun!  This will be interesting.  This will make folks laugh.”

Opened up the door.  Put my things down….between putting my bag away and hangin up my coat…poof (yes, poof) it was gone.

Just.

Like.

I was getting ready to read the book review section when my fella started talking.

He started talking about this fender guitar that he had when he was a young pumpkindoodle and the amp that he loved.  I looked up.  Put the paper down.  And put on my “I am listening” face.  The problem is…it was a lie.

When he starts talking about this…I start to drift…

I can’t help it.

Cuz I KNOW…

He will soon be talking about tubes.

Amp tubes.

And last night was no exception.  Within a heartbeat…I heard him say “the tubes were from the 60′s and they had such an amazing…..”

That’s all I heard…

Cuz I noticed that his chair was pulling on the curtains.  He had pushed the chair back and the leg was on the curtain…pulling it down.  I could tell, because the curtain rod was dipping down.

“…I should have bought more of those tubes on ebay when….”

And then I noticed that the hanging candle holder was crooked.  I must have brushed against it when I was dusting yesterday.

“…the fender sounded so amazing with that old amp…”

And then I noticed that the picture above the entertainment system was tilted.  NOT OK.  AT ALL.

In the middle of his sharing these thoughts, I got up…straightened the pictures, straightened the candle holder and asked him to move his chair off the curtain.

“Wait! You haven’t even been listening!!!”  My fella said with shock in his voice.

“I am sorry.  I started to drift.”  I said…feeling like a total jerk.  (In my defense…I had heard this a gazillion times and I KNEW what he was gonna say!!!!)

He looked at me with his cute but hurt face:  “I thought you were supposed to be a good listener!!!”

Oh SNAP!!!!

He was right.  But, I was not gonna go down without a fight.

Why is that???  I wondered.  Then, my mind drifted down that rabbit hole.

All the while he was dronning on and on…oops.  I mean he was telling me about my sucky listening skills during his diatribe…oops.  I mean…conversation about tubes.  The funny thing was I still wasn’t listening.  Because now I was wondering about my defensiveness around not listening.

Finally, my brain was able to focus on what he was saying.

“Sorry” I said.  “I was being a shitty listener.  It is just kind of hard for me to stay focused when you talk about amp tubes.  I try.  Well, no don’t.  Sorry.”

He looked at me.

I looked at him.

Then, he shifted gears and began again.  “What do you think of the new fret board on the PRS?”

I picked up the paper and continued to read….

I know this is so weird.

I haven’t written anything about the holidays…and today it ain’t gonna happen either.

Instead I am going to entertain you with a funny little story of how I finally heard my first porn message…ever.  You see, I have never seen porn (well, that’s not true.  I saw one porn movie in college during a sexuality class.  Something about a woman who needed her copier fixed).  And once by accident, I ran into some online porn when I was doing a search on ‘big pickles.’ Don’t ask.

But, that is really is not much exposure. I still see myself as a porn virgin of a sort!

So…on with the story

I have had this secret free conference line for about 6 years.  I don’t know how I got it.  One day, it just showed up and I started to use it.  Soon after this magical moment, I took a class with my wonderful friend Christine (she is the babe that I do the radio show with!) and we were put into groups….called pods.  This is were we met our brilliant and lovely friend Alix.  After some strange conversations in the class, the three of us dropped out.

We decided to form our own group.  Just the three of us.

We also changed our name…we didn’t love the whole ‘pod’ thing so we started calling ourselves the “poddetts!”

I told Christine and Alix about my magic conference line and The Poddetts have been using it ever since.  We have become very close friends.  We chat about all sorts of things from the mindless to the very mindful.  I don’t think I would have gotten through those rough years of illness without them.

Then yesterday….something really weird happened.  I dialed the magic number, at the agreed upon time.

Waiting for the dudes voice that tells me to put in the pin number.

Instead I heard a different voice.

A different dudes voice talking about donuts, holes and hard core porn.

When I heard him say something about donuts and hard core porn…I quickly hung up.  Thought that I had dialed the wrong number.  So, I tried it again.  Nope.  Porn dude was still there.  I tried one more time…this time I listened for a bit longer in case porn dude had something interesting to say.  But, he didn’t.  And I got scared thinking that he could see me listening in…so, I hung up.

I was afraid that he could see my phone number and would try and call me to get me to do something weird with donuts….or something.  My mind got kind of fuzzy with the possible details.

Cuz porn dudes can see you when you dial their numbers…right????

Well, it is not technically porn dudes number…technically it is MY number.

It’s not like I can call him and say: “Hey porn dude!  You stole my magic conference phone number!!!!  Give it back!!!”

After dialing, redialing and then dialing again…I called Alix.

She quickly answered the phone “ewwwwww!  What was that???”

Then she flashed over to Christine and we all talked at once about porn dude.  We wondered what could have happened that porn dude could steal our magic phone line.

Since when does magic join forces with porn?

So I guess this is the end of magic conference line.  It was awesome while it lasted.  I am going to miss dialing that number every week hearing my beloved friends voices at the other end.  It is the end of an era.

Of course we will continue our weekly get togethers.  We will continue sharing our lives with each other.  We will find a new forms of magic.

As for porn dude…I just don’t know what to say.

Except, I don’t think I will ever be able to look at donuts in the same way.

EVER!

I came to my blog this morning all ready to do some writing.  My coffee poured into one of my favorite cups, some nice classical music playing in the background, wearing my favorite T-shirt of the week and my comfy jammie pants.  I decided to wear my tiara too just for kicks!  I was feeling all sorts of confidence in my ability to cut and paste…and in my new found ability to add pictures to my blog.

But alas…the gods had decided to take away the picture that had been posted yesterday. It was there yesterday.  I saw it with my own eyes!  The award was posted all confident and happy!  Then, this morning…gone.  GONE!!!!

Here is a quick recap of what happened yesterday…

…I was basking in all of my glory.  I enjoyed receiving “The lovely blog award” and spent a bazillion hours trying to figure out how to paste the award image in my blog and then doing all of the copying and pasting to pay this award forward.  It took me so long to do all of this that I decided that I would let folks know tomorrow that I had given them the award…

Today, that image (of the award) is gone.  I don’t know where it went and I don’t know how to get it back.  Since I don’t have the image of the award, I can’t have people come to my site to receive it. Do I still let people know that I want to give them the award even though I can’t?  Do I just let folks know how much I enjoy their blogs?  Do I just delete yesterday’s post after all of the work? All of these thoughts and questions are swirling around my little brain.  What to do…what to do.

Weirdly, I still have my tiara on and I feel sorta silly about that. I also feel sort of rebellious about it too.  Don’t I deserve to wear a tiara even when I mess things up? I mean can’t I just blame it on something else due to the fact that I am wearing a tiara?  It’s the gods fault…the technology gods…they are to blame.

Yeah, that feels better!

I have made my decision….I am going to let folks know that I gave them the award and that they can’t pick it up at my blog…but, I will tell them how much I enjoy their blogs:)

Well, I gotta take this tiara off, it is bugging my head.  My royal reign was very short!  My coffee cup is empty…time to fill it up:)  The classical music me doesn’t feel so fun anymore…I think I will put on some Grateful Dead. The jammie pants and T-shirt stay!

Yep…3!!!!!!

At first we thought that maybe these 3 squirrels were the family of the one that we took to the park and that somehow we had orphaned these 3 squirrels.  But, I don’t think that is true anymore.  I think the one that we released in the park was keeping those 3 squirrels away.

As I write this at 6:15 in the morning…the 3 little pains in our butts are sitting on the tip of the roof…talking about stuff…one has a nut in his/her mouth.  They are swishing their tails looking like they are having the BEST LIFE EVER!!!!

Yesterday at around 2:00 in the afternoon…I was on a call with a client…when I heard all of this clammerin above my head. They had decided that it was time to rearrange the furniture. By last night…they were fighting about the furniture placement. By early this morning, they seemed to have resolved the conflict and decided a fun game of tag was next on the list.  For the next handful of hours (between 1:00 and 3:00 AM) they were running from one end the attic to the other…when they needed a snack…they chewed on wood beams.

At 2:30 AM, I thought maybe I could stop them from making so much racket…so, I threw a rolled up sock at the ceiling…(Hey!  It WAS 2:30 in the morning…I wasn’t thinking clearly!!!).  Well, that did not have much impact on their frolicking and general loud noise making.  In fact, I don’t think they even noticed!

So, instead of one squirrel…we have three.  Instead of one noisy critter clammerin about….we have three.

I can’t believe that I am saying this…but….I can’t wait for it to get hot outside…cuz then they will move on out and we can plug up the hole that they are using as a door.  Until then…these are gonna be some long long long nights.

Here is another silly experience that happened the other day:

Last year I shared a story about some squirrels moving into our attic area.  They promptly moved out when the weather warmed up.  I guess they didn’t like the bazillion degree sauna effect that happens in the attic during the warmer months

Well, they are back.

I think it is the same family because they have the same arguments that the last family had…and they chew with their mouths open (just like the visitors did last year)!  Oh, and they like to chew on the wood beams…just like the previous visitors.

Yep.  I think it is the same family.

I took a peek up there recently to say “hi” and make sure they had enough wood to chew and clean towels for their showers.  But, they were sort of rude and did not say “hi” back.  In fact, all of the rustling that I had been hearing in the ceiling above my office stopped.

Maybe they were shy.

So, I waited.  I stood on the ladder, quietly watching the corner where they had been romping around just a few minutes before.

My mind drifted…I started wondering if we could use the space for something other than a squirrel motel…maybe I could put my office up here..hmmmmmm…we could put a little stairway there and some sky lights and I could paint it a pretty sky blue color…la la la…

All of a sudden…I saw a fuzzy little head and two sparkling eyes looking at me. The eyes didn’t look particularly friendly.  They looked sort of mischievous.  Like there was something up that I didn’t know about and the joke was on me.  I flashed on it jumping on my head and then I would be a bad character in a bad Chevy Chase movie running around screaming with a squirrel attached to my hair!

Or maybe it looked annoyed.  Annoyed that I was bothering him/her with my presence.  Like at any moment it was going to sigh and say “What the hell do you want????  Can’t you see I am busy????”

Since both thoughts seemed possible and because I am who I am, and I can’t help it, I apologized to the squirrel.  Out loud!

“Sorry”

My voice seemed to startle this squirrel into action because it took off…bounding across the attic and then disappeared.  I couldn’t tell how or where it got out…maybe there is some secret squirrel passage way that we can’t see.  Wherever it went, it was gone.  In a blink of an eye.

I took one last look around the attic.  They had certainly kept the place clean.  I appreciate that.  I closed up the hatch and climbed down the ladder.

As I write this, they are busy again.  I can hear them shuffling around and chewing on things.  Sounds like wood.  Unless they brought in some crunchy take out.  They love this corner of the attic.  Right above my head in my office.  Right there in the corner.  I fussed at them earlier…told them to stop making so much noise.  They were obliging.  For a bit.  But, now they are back at it…crunch crunch shuffle shuffle crunch!

And it is only April.

And immediate eviction is a difficult thing to implement.  Takes the county forever to get them out.  All that paper work.  Ugh.

Which means they will be here for at least another month or longer depending on how the weather goes.

Once the weather warms up, they will take off.  We will try to find the secret passage ways and close them up.

Again.

Until they leave, I guess we will be house mates.

Maybe they would be friendlier if I gave them some treats.  Kind of like chocolates on the pillows of the fancier hotels. Maybe if I got them some nuts….some fancy nuts.  Organic almonds or something.  That would be nice.  Do you think they would enjoy that?

Well, I am just not sure.

Until I figure it out, I guess I better get their little towels washed so they don’t hop down to our bathroom and take our towels.  They seem like those kind of squirrels.  Ya know?  Not very gracious.  Not very aware of the fact that we live right below them! Making noise at all hours of the day and night!

Drives me nuts.

*I just love saying that I was “reading the New York Times”…makes me feel so…hmmmm… cosmopolitan and sophisticated.  Well, really it helps me forget that I moved to this strange little neighborhood where my next door neighbor thinks that tires are the new garden accessory and cars belong on lawns.

Anyway, back to the article that I was reading.

The writer was talking about having an iphone.  And concluded half way through the article, that he hated it.  His conclusion intrigued me so I read on. His article was funny and irreverant.  My favorite!  I have heard all about the iphone.  I have heard that it is the coolest phone ever.  I have heard friends describe all the snazzy features.  They talk about music downloads, how cool the screen is, how cool the apps are…it can do this, that and the other thing.

But, can it wash, fold and put away the laundry?  Can it clean the toilet?  Can it market my business? If it can…I might change my mind about getting one;)

You see…I have don’t have an iphone.

You see…I have never had any type of cell phone.

You see…I am a cell phone virgin.

I have made calls on my fella’s phone but, it feels awkward and I never get how to send the call or how to hang the damned thing up.  I don’t even get where to hold it so that I can hear the person on the other line!  it is all so….so….so…something.  I am still a total virgin.  Coping a feel does NOT count!

I kinda like that I don’t have a cell phone. I don’t know why.  Maybe it’s some kind of latent rebellion on my part.  But, I am happy when I tell people that I don’t have a cell phone.  “What?” they say.  “You don’t have a cell phone?”  I explain that I work at home and that I don’t need one.  “Well, everyone needs one!”  they say.  Well, not me!

My friends are annoyed at me about this refusal to join the 21st century.

The other day, my friend said: “Why the hell don’t you get a cell phone Lynne!!!  Come on!  I need to get in touch with you sometimes when you are in your car!”

Me:  “Well, can’t you call me before I get into the car?”

Friend: “Well, I suppose.  But, if you had a cell we could have met a few minutes earlier!!!”

Me: “Oh.”

Recently, I was meeting another friend for a walk.  She was not sure if she was going to be late.  So, I told her that I would go do my errands and then call her on her cell phone.  She pointed out that I wouldn’t be able to call her cuz I don’t have a cell phone.  I smuggly told her that I would just find a pay phone.

A pay phone.

Easy.  Right?

Wrong.

Oh so wrong.

After running my errands, I looked outside of the stores.  I looked at gas stations.  I looked by the bus stops.  I even looked in a Starbucks.  *I needed a cup of coffee to keep my energy up to find a phone!!

No pay phones.

I found one phone booth…but there was no phone. It was empty.  You would think that they would take the whole thing…but, no.  Just an empty shell with a guys name and number who promised to show me a good time.  But, since there was no phone…and since I didn’t have a cell phone…I couldn’t have called it if I wanted too!

I headed to the place where we were going to meet.  SInce I didn’t call her…I wasn’t even sure if we were still going for a walk.  I looked up and saw a resturant.  Maybe they would have a phone.

Me:  “Hi!  Do you have a phone that I can use?”

Resturant Babe:  “No.  We don’t.”

Me:  “Who knew it was so hard to find a pay phone?”

Resturant Babe:  Looking at me like I was an idiot, “Is it a local call?”

Me:  “Yep, I need to call my friend to figure out where we are meeting.”

Resturant Babe:  “Here.  You can use my cell phone.”

Me: “Wow!  Thanks so much.”

She gets her purse…and she pulls out an iphone.

Yep. An iphone.

Now, I would have the chance to prove once again how much of an idiot she already knew that I was.

She hands it to me and walks away.

Uh.  I didn’t know how to turn the thing on.

I walk up to the area where she is laughing with a co-worker.   I assume that they were laughing at what an idiot I was!

Me:  “Uh, excuse me?  I don’t know how to use this.”  I hand the phone over to her.

Resturant Babe:  “Oh, no problem.”  Within a few seconds she had it on…did something with something.  Asked me what the number was.  Dialed it.  Handed it over to me.

I took the phone, saying “thanks so much” and put it to my ear.  I think I put it to my ear.  I couldn’t really tell.  I heard a light ringing.  At least I was close.

My friends answering maching came on.  She wouldn’t answer.  What was I thinking?  She didn’t recognize the phone number!  I left a message.

As I was driving home, I wondered if maybe I did need to get a cell phone.  An old fashion one, like my fella’s.  I could learn how to use that!  Then I would have a way to reach people when I was out and about.  And they could reach me.  And this wouldn’t happen again…

I pulled into my driveway.

Nah.

I don’t want to be reached 24/7.

I like having time in my car to enjoy the view and listen to tunes.

I don’t like when I see folks talking on their cell phones while they are driving over the white line.  Not even noticing that they almost smushed me in my cute little VW beetle.  I also don’t like when I am hanging out with a friend and they are on their cell phones.  Or texting.  Or checking messages.  ALways doing multiple things at once.

Nah.
